7 Mistakes Keeping Smart Marketers Broke
Do you make these mistakes in your online marketing?
They’re common.
I’ve made every one of them at various points in my online journey.
Luckily, I’ve survived to tell the tale!
1. Not having a well-defined target audience
This is a biggie.
You want to sell something you believe will benefit lots of people.
But have you defined clearly who you are going to sell it to?
It’s not enough to say you will sell X weight loss product to everyone who wants to lose weight.
It’s far better to say you will sell the product to busy women over 40 trying to lose weight.
Because then, you can clearly define their specific pain points, their goals, interests and more.
Which means your messaging – ads, email, content, or anything else – will be FAR more effective.
2. Selling what people NEED
This is a subtle one.
Your business will never take off if you sell what people need.
Why?
Because it’s never about you. It’s always about THEM.
Their desperate problems, desires, aspirations. THEIR perceptions, not yours.
Sell them what they WANT. Alongside, you can still give them what they really need too.
Now that’s a win-win!
3. Not sending regular emails
Smart marketers build a list. You know that.
But do you email that list regularly?
If you only email them when you have a new product to push. . .
. . . You are making a big mistake.
That’s also true if you only email like once or twice a month.
The difference regular mailing makes to your income is nothing short of AMAZING.
Try it and see.
And no, your list won’t hate you for it.
4. Focusing only on short-term results
Nothing wrong with short-term results.
You need them to stay in business.
But the main thrust of everything you do should be to earn the loyalty and trust of your audience.
To build a franchise, if you will.
That requires a different approach from the slash-and-burn tactics you often see online.
This is true whether you are a one-person operation doing affiliate marketing – or a large company with cash to spare.
5. Not deploying your personality
A key reason why people buy through your link is – YOU!
Your audience will go for your offers if they feel they know you, like you and trust you.
How do you create that know-like-trust state?
Through telling your story.
By relating your experiences and perspectives.
(And others’ stories too, while adding in your thoughts).
Great marketing is often great storytelling.
Stories help give your messaging a personal touch – a personality.
6. Not getting help
Are you the customer support team, CEO, coffee brewer, content creator rolled into one?
You may well need to be all of that when starting out.
But as soon as you can afford to, get help.
Focus on what you do best.
Outsource the rest.
Your bank account will thank you for it.
7. Not getting advice
No one has all the answers.
This is why you must seek out mentors, invest in training, attend workshops.
Like other successful marketers / entrepreneurs do.
It’s just the price you pay for getting ahead.
Don’t hesitate to invest in yourself.
YOU are your own best bet, after all.
